Kondo-ing it Yourself: 36 Places to Donate Your Clutter in Columbus

The new Netflix TV show “Tidying Up with Marie Kondo,” in which the best-selling author reintroduces her popular tidying techniques to a brand new audience, has shed a light on the cluttered lifestyles of the everyday family.

If you’re following Kondo’s method, you may be inspired to donate the stuff no longer “sparking joy.” Of course, the standard nonprofit organizations — Volunteers of America, Goodwill Columbus, Habitat for Humanity ReStores — are great options once you’ve decided on what to get rid of. The following in this list are places you may not have heard of, and may choose to donate to instead.

Clothing

Maternity: Birthright of Columbus and the Center for Humane Options in Childbirth Experiences will happily take your baby, newborn, and maternity clothing to give to mothers in need.

Formal and work wear: by appointment, Dress for Success Columbus requests work clothing for women, but the charity also accepts other clothing as well. For prom dresses and accessories you no longer have a use for, try Fairy Goodmothers.

Everything else: A large part of the remaining list will take gently used clothing items off your hands, these places especially: Church of the Good Shepherd, New Life Community Outreach, and Welcome Warehouse. St. Vincent de Paul thrift stores accept seasonal clothing, especially men’s shoes and pants.

Furniture and Household Items

Bedding and Linen, Kitchenware, and Small Appliances: Ohio Wildlife Center asks for your pillowcases, hand towels, large towels, and leather gloves for animal care. For gently used bedsheets, pots and pans, dishes, toasters, and the like, a number of organizations have a need: Center of Hope in Whitehall, United Methodist Church and Community Development for All People, Westside Free Store Ministries, J.O.I.N. (Joint Organization for Inner City Needs) and Faith Mission of Ohio. Faith Mission also takes suitcases, specifically with wheels, if you have any laying around.

Furniture: The Veterans First Foundation and Joseph’s Coat will also accept standard furniture items like TVs, tables, couches, and dressers. Many charities do not accept mattresses, but if you have one in good condition, the Furniture Bank of Central Ohio will be your best bet.

Books, bikes, and toys: Columbus Metropolitan Library either adds donated books, CDs, DVDs, VHS and cassette tapes to its collection or resells through the Friends of the Library program. Volunteers of America Ohio not only accepts furniture, but also books, games, and other entertainment items. Inner City Ministries and Dublin Furniture Banc are of the small number of local places that will accept used toys, and for bikes and bike parts, donate to Third Hand Bicycle Co-op.
